  Mayberry Presbyterian Church

dshook@swva.net

Mayberry Presbyterian Church is one of the five historic rock churches located in the tri-county area of Carroll, Floyd, and Patrick Counties of southwestern Virginia.

Mayberry Church is located adjacent to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Mile Post 180.1, just south of Meadows of Dan. Our service begins at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday. Visitors are most welcome and come as you are!

Mayberry, as well as the other rock churches, were founded by the Rev. Robert W.(Bob) Childress in the early 1920's. This effort was immortalized in the book - "The Man Who Moved A Mountain", written by Richard C. Davids.

We, as well as our sister church, Bluemont, located near Mile Post 192, are both served by a grandson of Rev. Childress', Stewart Childress.

Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church
Blue Ridge Parkway, Mile Post 173
Meadows of Dan, VA 24120

Constructed of native stones from the Blue Ridge Mountains, the beautiful rock churches in Floyd are three of the six rock churches built in the first half of the 20th century under the leadership of Rev. Bob Childress. Made famous by the book The Man Who Moved a Mountain by Richard C. Davids (1970), these historic-but-active churches stand as living testimony to the spirit, faith and grit of the mountain people. The three "rock churches" in Floyd County are Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church, Willis Baptist Church (formerly Presbyterian), and Indian Valley Presbyterian Church.

Drive Virginia’s Blue Ridge Parkway - “America’s Favorite Scenic Drive”. The Parkway in 2005 has been designated an All-American Road, the highest honor bestowed by the Federal Highway Administration to recognize roadways that possess surpassing scenic, historic, recreational and other intrinsic qualities that make them "one of a kind".

Blue Ridge Tree Climbing, LLC

Meadows of Dan, VA 24120

The best and most accurate word for me to describe the attraction to tree climbing is “magic”. We understood the true meaning of the word as children when most of us started climbing, but as we supposedly grew up our gaze went from the tree tops to the desk tops. If you cannot remember the meaning of childhood magic, or do remember and want to get it back, then I suggest you simply climb a tree again. The basic act of changing your angle on the world will definitely change your outlook and your attitude. If you are in reasonably good shape, regardless of your age, then you can learn to climb a tree on rope.

Meadows of Dan, VA 24120

Lover’s Leap is one of several spectacular views along your journey through Patrick County. In the 1600's, the Indians inhabited the Blue Ridge Mountains. White settlers started arriving and began clearing land to farm. Conflict arose between the Indians and the settlers. Legend has it that the son of a settler saw the twinkle in the eyes of the Chief's daughter, Morning Flower, and was immediately love-struck. The couple began to meet secretly and their love continued to grow. The young man and Indian maiden were threatened and shunned. With the beautiful rock and wildflowers as their backdrop, they jumped into the wild blue yonder ensuring they would be together forever. As you gaze out at Lover’s Leap, you can still see the evidence of their love in the beautiful view and hear them whisper in the cool evening breezes.
